Porsche chose to launch the 8th generation of their iconic 911 model at the Los Angeles Auto Show because “California has been like a second home to Porsche for decades”, declared Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG. “The new 911 is even more powerful, even more emotional, and even more efficient than its predecessor – and also offers extensive digital features”. However, Blume added that in spite of all the innovations, the 911 is still just what it has always been – a pure sports car and the pulsing heart of Porsche. “The 911 is our icon.” Unmistakably committed to the Porsche design DNA, with a much more muscular look and an interior featuring a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor, the new 911 is timeless and modern at the same time. Intelligent control and chassis elements and innovative assistance systems combine the masterfully uncompromising dynamism that the classic rear-engine sports car is famous for, but in step with the demands of the digital world.
The exterior design of the new Porsche 911 is familiar and yet unmistakably new. Wider, more assertive, and more advanced, the rear is 44 mm wider than the previous model while the front is 45 mm wider. The wider wings arch over 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear. The rear-wheel-drive models (Carrera and Carrera S) now match the bodywork width of the existing all-wheel models (Carrera 4 and 4S).
The new Porsche revives the traditional 911 look with a forward-extended hood that has a distinctive recess in front of the windshield and LED headlights that are seamlessly integrated into the fenders. Flush-mounted electrical pop-out door handles and redesigned side mirrors improves aerodynamics and reduces wind noise. A wider variable-position spoiler, a seamless light bar, vertical air intake louvers, and a centrally-located third brake light dominates the rear. Except for the front and rear sections, the entire outer skin is now made from aluminum.Inspired by the 911 from the ’70s, the distinctive interior features straight lines and recessed instruments. Like the original 911, the new dashboard covers the entire width between the A-pillars and features a centrally-positioned tachometer, two frameless freeform information displays, and a 10.9-inch center screen for the Porsche Communication Management (PCM). A 5-button control panel that looks like classic toggle switches, a center console with touchpad, and new ergonomic seats refine the new 911’s interior.The next generation 911 is powered by a more powerful flat-six turbocharged engine with 331 kW (450 PS) in the S models. An improved fuel injection process, a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system, and a newly-developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission propel the new Carrera S to a top speed of 308 km/h and new Carrera 4S all-wheel-drive to 306 km/h. Additional highlights include the Porsche Wet mode to make driving on wet roads even safer and Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera.Detlev von Platen, Executive Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, emphasized the importance of the American market for the sports car manufacturer. “More than 55,000 Porsches were delivered to the USA in 2017.
